Physical Exam: Grid Section
This section allows the provider to record information about the physical exam portion of the encounter.
By default, this alternate view of the Physical Exam sections appears for those specialties where the grid layout and side-by-side laterality is most commonly used, such as Physical Therapy and Orthopedic Surgery.
You can change your default view using the User Preferences page (select the Disable PE Grid user preference), or you can toggle between the standard and grid views using the View as menu at the top of the section. Changing the view using the View as menu also updates the PE template layout user preference.
Your practice must use athenaClinicals, and you must have permission to view the patient chart to access this section.
- Display the Exam stage of an encounter, and locate the Physical Exam section.
- Click the plus icon to add a PE template.
The collapsed template appears. - Click the header to expand the template.
If the grid view does not appear, you can select it using the View as menu at the top of the section. Changing the view using the View as menu also changes your user preference. - Select a finding.
You can use the Normal Right or Normal Left controls to select all right or left normal findings.
Use All Normal to select all normal findings regardless of laterality. - When you are finished, you can click Next to proceed to the A/P section.
In the grid view, athenaOne extracts common words or strings of words within a finding to create row and column headings. Sentences appear in the following format:
- The first column displays any row headings, if applicable.
- The second column displays normal findings.
- The third column displays abnormal and neutral findings.
- Contradicting findings appear in a single row.
If two sentences appear adjacent in a paragraph, and differ only by the words "right/left" or "active/passive," then the sentences appear side-by-side in the encounter view.
On a small computer screen, sentences with laterality may not display side-by-side, in a tabbed view.
Select a tab to document right or left findings. Switching tabs changes the laterality in the entire template.
To increase your workspace and view left and right sentences side-by-side, collapse the patient chart (on the left) or the D&O cart (on the right).
